7 Ways to Use White Vinegar

White vinegar is a true kitchen superstar, incredibly versatile and surprisingly inexpensive. It’s one of those pantry staples that can do so much more than you might think. First of all, it’s a fantastic cleaner. Mix it with water, and you’ve got yourself a powerful all-purpose cleaner for windows and even floors. Plus, it’s a natural deodorizer, so say goodbye to funky smells in your kitchen or bathroom. And here’s a little secret: it’s a great fabric softener too! Just add a splash to your laundry rinse cycle, and voila, softer clothes without the need for expensive products.

But that’s not all! White vinegar is also a secret weapon in the kitchen. It adds a tangy kick to salad dressings and marinades, and it can even be used as a substitute for lemon juice in recipes. Forgot to soak your beans overnight? No problem! White vinegar can help speed up the process by adding a tablespoon or two to the soaking water. It’s also a handy tool for preserving the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables. Just a splash in the cooking water can help prevent your veggies from turning dull. With its versatility and wallet-friendly price tag, white vinegar is truly a must-have ingredient in any kitchen.

SURFACES YOU SHOULD NOT USE VINEGAR ON:

White vinegar, while a versatile and eco-friendly cleaner, isn’t suitable for all surfaces. When it comes to natural stone tiles or countertops, it’s best to steer clear of vinegar. The acidic nature of vinegar can cause etching and dulling. Similarly, white vinegar should not be used to clean hardwood flooring. Vinegar’s acidic properties can strip away the protective finish, leaving your beautiful floors looking lackluster.

Now, let’s talk grout. Unsealed or damaged grout can absorb vinegar, leading to discoloration and potential weakening. In addition, natural carpets and rugs, like those made from delicate fibers such as wool or silk, can also be negatively affected by vinegar.

Lastly, we have unfinished leather and some types of upholstery. Vinegar’s acidic nature can cause discoloration, drying, and potential damage. Remember, it’s all about finding the right cleaning method for each unique surface to keep them looking their finest!

HOW TO MAKE CITRUS-INFUSED VINEGAR:

Making citrus-infused white vinegar is a breeze and adds a zesty twist to your cleaning routine. Here’s how you can do it. Start by collecting citrus peels, like orange, lemon, or grapefruit, and freeze them until you’re ready to use them. Once you have your frozen citrus peels, grab a glass jar and fill it with white vinegar, leaving some space at the top. Now, toss in those citrus peels, along with a handful of fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme, and even a few pine sprigs for a hint of forest freshness. Seal the jar tightly and let it sit in a cool, dark place for a couple of weeks, allowing the flavors to meld and infuse into the vinegar. After the waiting period, strain out the peels and herbs, and voila! You have your homemade citrus-infused white vinegar, ready to tackle your cleaning tasks with a delightful, natural fragrance.

HERE ARE MY TOP 7 WAYS TO USE WHITE VINEGAR:

ALL PURPOSE AND GLASS CLEANER

To use white vinegar as an all-purpose cleaner or glass cleaner, simply mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Then, spray the solution onto the desired surface, wipe it down with a cloth, and voila! You’ll be amazed at how effortlessly it cuts through grime and leaves everything sparkling clean. I like to use my citrus-infused vinegar for this to add to the cleaning power.

FABRIC SOFTENER

To use white vinegar as a fabric softener, simply pour about half a cup of vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser or directly into the rinse cycle of your washing machine. As the clothes go through the rinse cycle, the vinegar will help remove residue, soften the fabric, and leave them smelling fresh without any lingering vinegar scent. My citrus-infused vinegar is really nice for this, as well.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLE WASH

To use white vinegar as a fruit and vegetable wash, start by mixing 1/2 cup to 1 cup of vinegar into a large bowl of water. Then, simply soak your produce in the vinegar solution for a few minutes, swishing them around gently, before rinsing them thoroughly with water. I like to use my kitchen sink for this because then I can wash all of my produce at once. For soft fruit/vegetable (think berries), soak for 5 minutes. For hardier fruits/vegetables (think apples), soak for 20 minutes.

RINSE AID

Simply pour a small amount of white vinegar into your dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment and let it do its magic! As the dishwasher runs, the vinegar helps to remove any residue or spots on your dishes, leaving them sparkling clean.

COFFEE MACHINE CLEANER

Pour some white vinegar into the water reservoir of your coffee machine. Run a brewing cycle with the vinegar-water mixture to descale and clean out any mineral deposits, leaving your coffee machine fresh and ready to brew a tasty cup of joe. Be sure to run another cycle with plain water through to get rid of an excess vinegar.

SHOWER CLEANER

Simply mix equal parts of white vinegar and dish soap in a spray bottle, giving it a good shake. Then, spray the mixture onto your shower surfaces, scrub away, and rinse for a sparkling clean shower in no time! This works especially well on glass shower doors. Be sure to allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing.

ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER CLEANER

Add a splash of white vinegar to an empty diffuser and set it to run for 10-15 minutes. Then, turn off the diffuser and wipe the excess clean with a paper towel. Now, you are ready to diffuse your essential oils without adding any of that gunk into the air.
